Q1. I came into light in 1940 in a colossal city where bones of bishops and saints are entombed in the grand cathedral. Their names scratched on stone and forgotten. Below the cathedral lie deeper tombs of an earlier temple of the Aztecs, the notorious newcomers to our metropolis on the swamp lakes. Their stone-and-dust bones are monumentally nameless. My entry was trivial. Even in our neighborhood almost no one know the good news. If the man next door had horribly strangled my big sister or a tropical hurricane had lost its compass and slunk inland across the plains to destroy our house and toss me fifty meters into a corn field. As it was, except for the iceman, who knew me well since he gave me small chunks of free ice to chew on during the summer, I was more like a ghost than a spoiled noisy brat. I was out of sight . that suited me fine during my whole childhood. I never complained to my mother or schoolmates or myself. I walked about in silence as fish swim in dark eternities.

خرجت إلى الضوء, عام 1940، في هذه المدينة الهائلة، حيث عظام القديسين والمطارنة دفنت في الكاتدرائية الكبرى. أسماء هؤلاء نقشت على الحجر، لكنها صارت نهباً للنسيان. أسفل الكاتدرائية ، تصطف قبور أكثر عمقاً ، لأولى معابد شعوب الأزتيك، هم القادمون، ذائعو الصيت، إلى حاضرتنا، قرب مستنقعات البحيرات. عظامهم اليت من حجر وغبار، لا أسماء لها، على الأضرحة. كان دخولي تافهاً حتى في حيينا، لم يكن لأحد تقريباً أية دراية بالإخبار الطيبة. لو أن الرجل الذي يسكن قبالتي لم يخنق شقيقتي البدينة على نحو مروع، أو أن عاصفة استوائية أضاعت بوصلتها وهبت على اليابسة، عبر تلك السهول، لتدمر بيتنا، وتقذفني، خمسين متراً باتجاه حقل الذرة، وكما كان الحال، وباستثناء رجل الجليد الذي كان يعرفني جيداً منذ أن أعطاني قطعاً صغيرة مجانية من مكعبات الجليد لكي امضغها خلال الصيف، كنت مجرد شبح، أكثر من ذاك الثرثار الصاخب المشاكس. كنت قد توانيت عن الأنظار، وكان ذاك لمصلحتي طوال فترة طفولتي. لم يسبق لي أن شكوت لوالدتي أو لزملاء صفي أو لنفسي. كنت أتجول بصمت مثل سمك يسبح في السرمدية المظلمة.
